The Trinity
We believe that God is three distinct persons who are so
selfless in
nature that they function as one: Father, Son (Jesus), and Holy
Spirit.
Jesus Christ
We believe that Jesus is the second member of the trinity, the
Son of
God. Having existed with the Father for all eternity and being
fully God,
He emptied Himself of all His divine attributes (all-present,
all-powerful,
all-knowing), retaining the nature of God, which is love, and became
fully
human. He died for our sins, arose from the dead with the new body
of the
resurrection, the same kind which will be had after death and the final
resurrection by all who believe in Him. In doing so He became
the
"firstborn among many brethren." He ascended up to heaven before
the eyes
of the disciples and now sits at the right hand of the Father in this
resurrected body, making intercession for us, awaiting the Father's
direction
for His second coming.
The Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third member of
the trinity, and is fully God. His chief work is to "glorify
Jesus"
and to "take of what is His and make it known" to us. The
Holy Spirit
comes to indwell a person at the moment he or she first
receives Christ and becomes a Christian. Being one with
Jesus,
the Holy Spirit makes the presence of Jesus known in and the
life of
Jesus effective through the believer. All the work of God
accomplished in and through the life of a believer is through
the
abiding presence of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Scriptures
We believe that the Bible was written by people who were under the
inspiration of the God through the Holy Spirit. These 66 books of
the Old
and New Testaments, having been preserved and guarded by God through
Church
history, provide for us everything we need to know regarding the will of
God for
our salvation and relationship with Him as they reveal the Person
of Jesus
Christ to us.
Sin
We believe that sin is of two kinds, act and
nature.
Through the sin of Adam and Eve, we have all inherited a sinful nature
which
inclines us toward evil and self-centeredness. Actual sin
is a
willful decision to act apart from God, to reject or disobey Him.
No one
will be punished eternally for having been born with a sin nature.
Only
those who finally reject God, saying "No" to Him (actual sin) are at
risk for
eternal loss.
Atonement
We believe that atonement (the making of amends) for ALL human sin took place through suffering and death of Jesus Christ on the cross and by the shedding of His blood. It is provided for ALL people, and is the only way that salvation is provided for us. It covers children and those who are unable to understand (such as the mentally impaired), and those who are able to understand the decision and choose to receive it.
Free Agency
We believe that God is at work in
every person's
life, and enables us to make a decision to receive or reject Him, to say
"Yes"
or "No." Relationship with Him continues and grows with a
continuous "Yes"
to His continuing work in the life of the believer, but this
relationship
is hindered by any "No" and can be severed.
Repentance
We believe that a response to God's
moving in a
person's life always includes repentance, which is a complete turning
away from
what displeases Him (sin). It is a willing and purposeful turning
toward
Him and His way. Such repentance comes as the result of God
moving
and the individual responding with willingness.
Justification, Regeneration, Adoption
We believe that the split second that a person receives Jesus
Christ,
several wonderful things happen. He or she is justified
before
God. Sins are forgiven, and it is as if he or she had never
sinned,
standing before the Judge without any guilt. He or she is also
regenerated, or born again, in that moment.
Jesus
Christ, through the Holy Spirit, now comes to live within. A
change has
happened. He or she is a new person, and never has to go back to
the
former life. The Holy Spirit now lives within to break old
patterns and
free him or her to live the way in which God designed. That person
is now
also adopted, part of the family of God. The new Christian is a
joint
heir with Jesus Christ, who is the firstborn among many
brethren. He or she
can approach God the Father with boldness, knowing Him as
Father
instead of Judge.
Entire Sanctification
We believe that, after a period of growth, a
believer
will realize an inner
tension
resulting from the presence of the sin nature still within.
This sin
nature (inclined toward self-centeredness) conflicts with the
believer's new nature and the presence of
the Holy
Spirit (leading in God's ways). It feels like a civil war
within. We believe that the believer
may
receive from God the work of entire sanctification (or complete
cleansing)
that cleanses him or her completely from the sin nature and allows
for a
heart completely dedicated to God alone. We believe that the
believer
will continue to grow after this
experience,
and will still make mistakes, but can live always saying
"Yes" to
God with love toward Him. We believe that entire
sanctification comes to the believer in
God's time as
he or she continually responds to Him.
The Church
We believe that God has called into being the Church as His vessel
for the
continued demonstration of Jesus Christ in the world. Our mission
is to
know Him and let Him touch others through us. We are His body, the
individuals who have personally accepted Him as Lord, bound by His
Spirit
together to make up the Church with the Lord Jesus as the Head.
Though we
worship together as His body in our local church and as a denomination,
we
acknowledge and affirm our connection in the universal body of Christ
with all
those who are born again, regardless of denomination or label.
Baptism
We believe that baptism is a powerful outward symbol of what
happens in the
life of an individual who is born again into new life in Christ.
Being a
symbol not of what man does, but what God does in our lives, young
children may
be baptized upon request of a parent or guardian who agrees to Christian
nurture
and counsel. Baptism may be done by sprinkling, pouring, or
immersion,
according the preference of the individual.
The Lord's Supper
We believe that the Lord's Supper, or Holy Communion, is
an outward demonstration of the inward heart
intention to
know Jesus Christ in close relationship. The elements represent
His body
and blood, offered to us. We eat and drink, acknowledging our
acceptance
of His saving work and His presence within us.
Divine Healing
We believe that God does heal people as He sees fit in His timing
and
according to what He knows will bring us and others to a saving
knowledge of
Himself. Therefore, we believe in praying for the healing of the sick. We also believe that He
heals through
the many avenues of medicine and science provided for us in this day and
time.
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ will appear again, and that those who are alive at that time will join those risen believers who had previously been asleep to meet the Lord and be with Him forever.
Resurrection, Judgement, and
Destiny
We believe in the resurrection of the dead: that all will be raised
from
the dead and will face final judgment. The basis of judgment will
be each
individual's response to God as He has worked in his or her life.
Eternal
life with Jesus is the reward for those who have believed in Him and responded "Yes." Eternal separation from Him is
the
choice for those who have persisted in saying "No" to Him.
